No re-encode when it isn't needed
When the codec already fits the new format — like H.264 video from an MKV going into MP4 — the stream is copied as is. Same quality, and even long videos finish in seconds.
Re-encodes only when it must
Formats that need a different codec are re-encoded: VP9 and Opus for WebM, H.264 and AAC for MP4 and MOV — the combination iPhone, Mac and editors open without complaint.

Which format should I pick?
MP4 for phones, social uploads and most editors; WebM for lightweight video on a website; MOV for Final Cut or iMovie.
Why are some conversions fast and others slow?
If the codec can be copied, the file is only repackaged, which is quick. If it has to change, every frame is re-encoded, which takes time depending on length and your device.
Is my video stored anywhere?
No. The file never leaves your device — it's processed inside this tab with WebCodecs. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
Is there a file size limit?
Up to 2 GB per file. The result is held in your browser's memory, so on devices with little RAM smaller files are safer.
Which browsers are supported?
Recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Speed depends on your device — desktop Chrome and Edge are usually the fastest.
